What is Life Safety?

Life Safety systems are designed to do what they say on the tin – keep people safe and protected in an emergency. Life Safety systems can be beneficial for large-scale emergencies, such as a fire, and less severe emergencies, such as a power cut.

For example, Portable Fire Extinguishers can be put in place to put out a small fire immediately and prevent it from causing further damage.

Or, an Emergency Lighting system can help occupants of a building find their way to an exit in the event of a power outage or a fire. The Emergency Lighting acts as a back-up when electronic lighting fails, and prevents occupants from being trapped in complete darkness.

Don't know where to start?

  • Don’t know the difference between systems?
  • Unsure which Life Safety system is right for your property?
  • Want to talk to an expert.

Services we offer:

Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lighting acts as a back-up source of light in the event of a power outage or fire. Should a building be stuck in darkness and normal electronic lighting fails, the Emergency Lighting system will illuminate and guide occupants to the nearest exit.

Sunfish Services Limited are members of the ECA, and offer installation and testing for Emergency Lighting systems. All of our Emergency Lighting systems are installed and maintained in compliance with British Standard BS 5266-1, ensuring every system is in full working order.

Portable Extinguishers

Portable Extinguishers can put out small fires before they grow too large and cause severe damage.

How do they work? This depends on the type of extinguisher you have. Fire needs three things: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Fire extinguishers remove one of these elements (i.e., cooling the heat, removing the oxygen and smothering the fuel) to put out the fire.

Our engineers supply and service Portable Extinguishers across the UK. All of our extinguishers are serviced in accordance BS5306-8.

EVCS – Emergency Voice Communication System (Disabled Refuge System)

EVCS – Emergency Voice Communication System – is a type of intercom system that allows people in a refuge area, primarily disabled or mobility impaired people, to communicate with firefighters in an emergency and assist with evacuations. If a person is unable to use a designated escape route, the EVCS allows them to make their presence known to firefighters.

Sunfish Services supply, install and service Emergency Voice Communication Systems.

Automatic Opening Ventilation System (Smoke Vent)

Automatic Opening Ventilation Systems helps to extract smoke from buildings in the case of a fire, helping to clear escape routes exits are clearly visible to occupants. Not only does this help with visibility, but it helps to prevent the fire from spreading further and reduces the risk of damage to the property.

Sunfish Services service and repair Automatic Opening Ventilation systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Life Safety system?

Put simply, a Life Safety System is a system that has the function of keeping people safe in an emergency situation.

Are heat detectors Life Safety devices?

Heat detectors do play a role in identifying potential fires as part of a fire alarm system, however on their own they may take too long to respond and alert occupants. Heat detectors should not be relied upon to identify fires by themselves.

Is a fire alarm system a Life Safety system?

Yes. The purpose of a fire alarm system is to identify fires and provide an alarm to alert occupants and prompt an evacuation from the building.
