What is a fire alarm system?

A fire alarm system is installed within a property to help keep people safe from the dangers of fire. The system is designed to detect a potential fire and alerts the occupants of the property to evacuate the premises usually via a loud and repetitive alarm.

How do fire alarm systems work?

A fire alarm system is made up of several different forms of detectors which are designed to detect signs of a fire. If a fire is detected, this is then communicated to a fire panel which alerts occupants that there is a fire in the building, typically via a loud alarm.

Types of detector

There are different types of detectors in a fire alarm system, the main four detectors typically found in a system include:

  • Heat Detector: This detects if the heat within a part of the building goes over a certain temperature or if the rate of rise of temperature exceeds a predetermined threshhold.
  • Smoke Detector: This detects if there is smoke within a specific area of the building.
  • Carbon Monoxide Detector: This detects if carbon monoxide levels are too high within a specific area, which may be an indicator that a fire has started.
  • Multi-Sensors: A multi-sensor offers a combination of the types of detection listed above, thereby reducing the risk of unwanted alarms.
  • Manual Call Points: A manual call point is a red break glass unit which is operated by a person should they spot a fire within a building. If any of these detectors detect a fire or a manual call point is operated, they will set off the fire alarm which will alert any occupants within the building to evacuate.

Fire Alarm Panel

Once a fire alarm detector is set off, it is communicated to the fire alarm panel. The fire alarm panel is the hub of the fire alarm system and allows users to see which part of the building a fire has been detected in.

Do I need a fire alarm system for my business?

The need for a fire alarm system in a building is determined by a fire risk assessment. Many buildings will require a fire alarm system so that occupants can be easily warned in case of fire.

What is the difference between a wired and wireless fire alarm system?

The key difference between a wired and wireless fire alarm system, is that a wired fire alarm system uses cables to communicate whereas wireless fire alarm systems uses radio.

Wired fire alarm system

Wired fire alarm systems are often seen as the cheaper method of installing a fire alarm and parts for wired systems are easier to source which helps keep maintenance affordable. Furthermore, as wired systems transmit signals via cables it means that there is little risk of signal interference.

Wireless fire alarm system

Wireless fire alarm systems can be a useful solution in buildings where it is difficult to install the alarm system. In heritage buildings where it is imperative that the building is not damaged, a wireless system is often seen as convenient. Furthermore, wireless fire alarm systems take less time to install which is useful for properties that are only open for a short period of time.
