Is CCTV legal?

Yes, it is legal to have CCTV cameras installed for your property, whether it is a domestic or a public building. However, CCTV cameras should not be installed in areas where privacy is expected, such as bathrooms and bedrooms.

You should be mindful of the Data Protection Act. Some areas may require additional licenses, such as public areas. Contact your local authorities for guidance.

CCTV at Home: Things to Think About

The gov.uk website suggests you consider the following when installing a CCTV system for your home:

  • Make neighbours aware that you are installing a CCTV system and put up a sign that is clearly visible
  • Cameras should only capture your property – avoid placing them so that they capture public places like parks, or neighbour’s homes
  • Ensure your system is installed correctly and in line with guidance. Click here for more.
  • Be aware of Data Protection Rights
  • Cameras should not be placed where people expect privacy, such as bathrooms and bedrooms
  • Ensure the date/time on recordings is accurate
  • Ensure the recordings are secure and only used for the purpose for which your system was installed (do not share on social media sites)
  • Your CCTV system must be regularly maintained to ensure it remains compliant with regulations
