Do vapes come with a fire risk?

March 27, 2024

Vaping is one of the most common habits in the UK today, with sales of disposable vapes surging in recent years. With the ban on disposable vapes being introduced in England, Scotland and Wales, the conversation around vaping and its impact has never been more prominent. In today’s blog, we’re looking at whether vapes come with a fire risk, and what we can do about it.

Are vapes a fire hazard?

Yes. This is because the batteries used to power vapes are lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are amongst the most common type of battery we use. They power our phones, laptops, cars, e-bikes and e-scooters to name a few. However, they are also highly flammable, and if they become damaged, they can cause vicious fires to break out.

Last year, The Guardian discovered that there had been a rise in fires at UK waste plants due to improper disposal of single-use vapes. The article claims that “around 1.3m single-use vapes are now thrown away each week in the UK”, however they are not disposed of in the correct manner. Many vapes are thrown away in general waste bins, and “research by Material Focus […] found that more than 700 fires in bin lorries and recycling centres were caused by batteries that had been dumped into general waste.” Single-use vapes are sold as disposable, but many people do not know how to dispose of them correctly, so they are thrown in with their general waste. The issue that arises here is the vapes end up in landfill and can cause fires which are extremely difficult to control.

How to dispose of vapes:

Vapes should not be disposed of or recycled at home. You should research the proper way to dispose of them for your local area.

  • Some local recycling centres provide vape disposal or electrical recycling
  • If you can remove the battery easily, remove it from the vape and dispose of it at your local recycling centre or supermarket
  • Vapes can often be disposed of via take-back schemes with the provider
  • Many vape shops also have recycling bins for used vapes

You should not recycle your vape in your home recycling bin.

How to prevent fires caused by vapes:

  • If your vape is rechargeable, only use the charger that came with the device and purchase your vape from a reputable seller
  • Do not leave your vape to charge overnight or unattended, and unplug the charger once the charge cycle is complete
  • Keep your vape in good condition to avoid the battery becoming damaged, punctured or bent. Keep away from water.
  • Do not store your vape with coins or keys, as this can cause a short circuit and explosion

The London Fire Brigade have lots of helpful tips on how to keep safe when using your vape.
