Elizabeth House: Milestone XProtect

January 28, 2025

Project Overview

Elizabeth House is a 15-storey residential block located in the centre of Leicester with a 24-hour concierge service who rely on the video surveillance system to assist them in their day-to-day duties. When Sunfish were awarded the maintenance contract for the site, we found the existing system to be end of life and in need of urgent repair.

The system we specified for the upgraded solution was Milestone XProtect as this would provide integration with both the existing Honeywell and Bosch IP cameras. It would also integrate with the new Comelit IP cameras we proposed to replace the existing analogue units, as well as over 13,000 other devices, to provide the client with plenty of options for future upgrade or repair works.

The Milestone platform provides a solid foundation for an estate-wide video surveillance solution across Platform Housing Group’s many sites. This in turn will help to reduce both system downtime, and investigation processes by providing the client with the ability to remotely monitor and review the live and recorded camera images.

Due to the scale of the system, various upgrade options were provided by breaking the project down into smaller aspects to assist the client manage their budgetary requirements. The final project included the following upgrade work:

  • Replacement of all recording equipment with a new Milestone platform to provide a stable and reliable system.
  • Supply and installation of dedicated mains supplies and Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) to include a 30-minute battery backup.
  • Upgraded PCs and monitors for viewing live and recorded images.
  • Retention and recommissioning of any existing IP cameras to help reduce repair costs.
  • Upgrade of any existing analogue cameras for high-definition IP cameras to provide improved images.

Due to operational requirements the existing system had to remain fully operational during the upgrade works. This was achieved by installing and commissioning the new system to work alongside the existing and resulted in minimal downtime for the client.

The full project was delivered (including additional works to segregate and re-commission the client’s own IT services) on time and on budget. Sunfish continue to provide service and maintenance to the system.

Neviles Court, Trinity College, University of Cambridge

The history of Trinity goes back to the reign of Henry VIII and most of its major buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Nevile’s Court was completed in the late 17th century when the library designed by Sir Christopher Wren was built. The Wren Library contains many treasures, the oldest of which is an 8th century copy of the Epistles of St Paul.
